Liquid-Metal-Grown Crystals

Beyond their scientific and technological significance, crystals grown from a liquid metal solvent can be visually appealing. We were fortunate to have observed a variety of intriguing crystal structures that we think might worth sharing.

Surface Solidification Patterns

Self-organized structures develop autonomously during the solidification of metals and alloys, and solidification structures are known to have multi-facet influences. In studying the solidification of liquid metal alloys, we observed a surface specific phenomenon different from the more familiar bulk solidification, which gives rise to easy-to-observe surface patterns.

Beyond the Lab

We observe processes and events across length and time scales in a material world, and then we draw inspiration from wild encounters in nature and quotidian moments in life.
